“Speaking in Defense of the Marginalized: Mennonite Rhetoric in World War I as an Enactment of Paradox”
Dr. Susan Schultz Huxman, president emeritus Eastern Mennonite University, Harrisonburg, Virginia
This presentation, based on Dr. Huxman’s dissertation and several scholarly articles, examines the ways in which Mennonites, as a marginalized group, wrestled with separation and assimilation in novel and disarming rhetorical patterns not captured in the predominant literature. Through advocacy on Capitol Hill, courageous encounters with patriotic angry neighbors, and managing reputations in the church, Mennonites used a “purification through transformation” approach to sidestep difficult questions of identity, confound traditional expectations for self-defense, and maintain the faith with few losses of church membership.
RSVP for dinner no later than end of business Friday, November 7
Please include the name(s) of persons attending as well as any dietary restrictions and any mobility/accessibility considerations in the order notes field at checkout.
