SUMMARY:Sunday-Afternoon-at-the-Museum: STAND Student Panel
DESCRIPTION:STAND students from all over the region have seen the effects of the vaping epidemic. Join us for a conversation about the rise of e-cigarettes and vaping\, its effects on young people\, and the positive things that STAND leaders are doing to encourage peers to make healthy decisions. Student panelists will be responding to questions about the past\, present\, and future of vaping\, as well as speaking about the impacts of vaping on their generation. \nThrough STAND\, youth are given opportunities and skills to reduce substance use\, promote positive mental health\, and take leadership to create significant change in their school and community.  Student leaders involved with STAND know that they are valuable contributors to social change and are empowered to lean into their strengths to impact the world around them. There are currently over 130 STAND students in 6 different communities that are working on creating a healthier\, more positive future for their peers. \nView the event recording.

SUMMARY:Grand Open House for Vapes: Marketing an Addiction
DESCRIPTION:Vapes: Marketing an Addiction will open at Kauffman Museum on July 29 with a Grand Open House from 2:00-6:00. \nVapes examines what we know about e-cigarettes–the new alternative to smoking. The exhibition tells three intertwining stories: the rise and fall of cigarette smoking and advertising in the 20th century; the emergence of the e-cigarette in the 21st century and new marketing strategies; and the challenges of nicotine addiction and quitting. \nDesigned as three compact\, free-standing modules\, Vapes features examples of vaping products\, videos\, photomurals\, and an LED infographic to educate visitors about e-cigarettes and marketing by the tobacco industry. \nVapes: Marketing an Addiction was developed as a companion to Kauffman Museum’s traveling exhibit Better Choose Me: Collecting and Creating with Tobacco Fabric Novelties\, 1880-1920 that tells how companies promoted tobacco consumption through the distribution of free collectible novelties. Selections from Better Choose Me will be shown alongside Vapes. \nRegular Kauffman Museum hours are Tues.-Fri. 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.\, Sat.-Sun. 1:30-4:30 p.m.\, closed Mondays and major holidays. Admission is $4 for adults\, $2 for children ages 6-16\, and free to Kauffman Museum members and children under 6.

SUMMARY:"The Immigrants Who Built Newton: One Spike at a Time" by Jenny Masais
DESCRIPTION:A Celebrate Kansas Day! Event:\nJoin us online for the free virtual presentation\, “The Immigrants Who Built Newton: One Spike at a Time” by Jenny Masias. Masias will elaborate on the history\, important contributions\, and crucial economic role that Mexican immigrants have made to Newton\, Kansas\, and beyond. Sign up to attend on Zoom. \n\nView the event recording.\n\n \nPresentation Abstract:\n\nThe prevalent link in the position of Latino neighborhoods in cities throughout Kansas is the railroad. Whether it is Newton\, Wichita\, Topeka\, Emporia or even larger cities like Los Angeles and Chicago\, the proximity of Latino neighborhoods to the train tracks is no coincidence. Newton\, Kansas has been a crucial geographical location where the railway traffic not only bridges east to west\, north to south but internationally from Canada to Mexico creating a bullseye in the center of the country. The recruitment of Mexican immigrant labor during the late 19th and 20th century expanded the railway and allowed for the economic growth of Newton\, and many similar cities in Kansas. These migrant workers who endured harsh working and living conditions managed\, through solidarity\, to forge tight-knit communities; all the while weathering a barrage of anti-immigrant political sentiment at the county\, state\, and national level. Via archival research\, I intend to shed light on the copiousness of Newton’s Mexican immigrant History through existing documents and pictures that have survived at the Kansas Historical nSociety\, Harvey County Historical Society\, and local church records. History has often been used as an instrument to advance the narrative of those in positions of power molding a one- dimensional historical memory. However\, history can also be a tool to correct the silencing of the past and its contributors. It is only through a complex analysis of this narrative that it is possible to fully understand the value of the contributions Mexican immigrants have made not only to Newton but to the State of Kansas and beyond.
