DESCRIPTION:Kauffman Museum invites you to join us on August 30 at 3 p.m. as we celebrate the opening of our new special exhibit\, Piece / Work: The Art of Mary Lou Goertzen\, which takes as its focus an iconic Mennonite artist whose work spanned the deeply personal and broadly commercial. \nThe opening will begin with a presentation by exhibit curator Dr. Rachel Epp Buller\, professor of visual arts and design at Bethel College: \nPiecing Stories Together \nThroughout her long life\, Mary Lou Goertzen turned to different art forms as a way to tell stories–about herself\, her surroundings\, and her family and friends. In this presentation\, Dr. Rachel Epp Buller will give a curatorial overview of Goertzen’s processes\, artistic motivations\, and unexpected commercial success. \nRefreshments will be served. \nWe look forward to seeing you at the opening! \nPiece / Work: The Art of Mary Lou Goertzen and its associated programming are sponsored in part by the State of Kansas through the Kansas Arts Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts.

SUMMARY:Declaration 1776 Exhibit Opening and Reception: "Celebrating the Sestercentennial of America's Patchwork of States Peoples\, Ideals\," Sara Reimer Farley\, quiltmaker\, researcher and author
DESCRIPTION:Sara Reimer Farley is a quiltmaker\, researcher\, and author. She began making quilts at fifteen\, using her maternal grandmother’s Kansas City Star pattern for “Cog Wheel” and stitching on her grandmother’s treadle sewing machine. From the beginning\, Sara’s quilts have been traditional in pattern and technique\, but she interprets the design\, sometimes subtly and sometimes boldly\, in nontraditional ways. Her favorite pattern is the nine patch. \nSara’s research has focused on quiltmakers in Kansas\, and she is fascinated with “herstories” of their lives and processes. As a participant in the Kansas Quilt Project and other documentation projects\, her focus was on interviewing the makers or quilt owners. \nSara’s presentation\, “Celebrating the Sestercentennial of America’s Patchwork of States\, Peoples\, Ideals\,” looks at those kinds of stories as she honors and explores 250 years of the peoples\, events\, places\, symbols\, documents\, states\, and service that have pieced
