DESCRIPTION:Join us as Daniel Markowitz reads from his book The Spoils of Victory\, the story of “a battle-hardened German POW and a devout Mennonite woman discover[ing] the contours of forgiveness and love in America’s heartland.” \nThe Spoils of Victory\, Markowitz’ first novel and book one in the Prisoners of War series\, focuses on a largely forgotten aspect of the history of World War II – the confinement and employment of hundreds of thousands of German POWs throughout the United States from 1943 to 1946. \nA book signing will follow the reading. Kauffman Museum will also feature a pop-up of POW artifacts from our collection. \n— \nDaniel J. Markowitz is a descendant of German and Slovenian immigrants who came to America in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Born in 1954 and raised in Olpe\, Kansas\, at the edge of the Flint Hills\, he grew up listening to his grandparents’ and other beloved elders’ stories of their home countries\, traditions\, and the hardships and joys experienced on their way to stability and prosperity. His love for history and storytelling grew out of their often humorous and sometimes hyperbolic oral chronicles.

Different waves of immigration to various parts of the state from the early 20th century to the present are discussed. The discussion focuses on community formation and culture. Valerie Mendoza weaves in stories from her own family experience. This includes name changes\, curanderas\, a 40-year-old tradition and NASA. These lived experiences show how her family members–immigrants and children of immigrants– have been trailblazers\, culture bearers and firsts. DESCRIPTION:The popular understanding of the immigration of Mennonites from the Russian Empire to the Plains states in the 1870s has a rather weak relationship to the actual events of the 1870s. It is only natural that a popularized explanation of the story would be very abbreviated and rather formulaic\, compared to a more in-depth examination. Many of the themes that usually appear in popular accounts are at best half-truths. The story of Mennonites bringing winter wheat is probably the most widely known stereotype. Others might include an exaggerated sense that the immigration process was unified and well-organized the lack of a sense of the context into which migration entered. Unpacking some of these stereotypes can broaden our understanding of the 1870s migration and identify other unexplored aspects of the story.

For some it meant a journey to Kansas\, believing “free state” meant free of racial discrimination. Discover how many realized that for Black people in Kansas “free” did not necessarily mean “welcome.” \nDr. Williams is a former professor of English and African American studies at Johnson County Community College. She is currently the executive director of the Black Archives of Mid-America in Kansas City. \n“Free Did Not Mean Welcome” is part of Humanities Kansas’s Speakers Bureau and “21st Century Civics\,” a collection of resources that invite Kansans to participate in community discussions and learn more about the history of American democracy and the shared responsibilities of citizenship. “21st Century Civics” is made possible with support from “A More Perfect Union: America at 250\,” an initiative of the National Endowment for the Humanities. \nProgramming assistance courtesy Humanities Kansas Speakers Bureau program.

DESCRIPTION:Recently retired historian and former Hesston College professor John E. Sharp will talk about the migration of 100 families from the Russian Empire to Turkistan in Central Asia in the early 1880s. John will show photos and tell stories gathered during years of research and multiple tours exploring The Great Trek migration. At a time when waves of Mennonites were COMING to North America\, a small group followed a dream to settle in Central Asia instead. Hear about their arduous experiences along the Silk Roads in modern day Uzbekistan and the welcome they received from local Muslims. How Mennonites lived in harmony with their Muslim neighbors is an inspiring story! \nPresentation will conclude with photos of the exhibits in the new Mennonite museum in Khiva.

DESCRIPTION:Eric P. Anderson holds a doctorate in American History from the University of Kansas\, specializing in American Indian cultures and the history of the United States West. He is an enrolled member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation and teaches at Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence\, Kansas. His major research focus is on American Indian education\, especially the system of federal boarding schools established for Native youth in the late nineteenth century. He is currently at work on a book about the history of Haskell Institute\, as well as textbook projects in American Indian Studies and Native history.

DESCRIPTION:April 21\, 2024 | Dr. Kim Perez will explore the role and impact of pioneering women in birdwatching in the late 19th and early 20th centuries\, focusing on figures like Mabel Osgood Wright and Florence Merian Bailey and their relationship to the burgeoning field of ornithology\, their activism\, and their role as authors. \nDr. Kim Perez fell in love with nature as a child and continued her relationship into adulthood. She received a BS in Wildlife Biology at Kansas State University\, where she worked on Konza Prairie as a research assistant to several graduate students and faculty. She even pursued her own undergraduate research projects and considered pursuing a career in biology. However\, her trajectory changed when she took a History of Science course at the University of Oklahoma and decided it was fascinating to study scientists themselves. After completing an MA and PhD in the History of Science at OU\, she accepted a position in the Department of History at Fort Hays State University\, where she has been for 23 years. Her research interests include women in the field of science\, the nature study movement\, and the boundaries between amateur scientific participation and professionalization. \nThis Sunday-Evening-at-the-Museum program\, as well as Dr. Perez’s Convocation program the following morning at Bethel College\, are underwritten by the Bethel College Women’s Association and the Carolyn Schultz Lectureship fund.

SUMMARY:"Of Wool & Silk: Textile Explorations in Central Asia\," Dr. Mary M. Dusenbury\, Affiliate Research Curator\, Spencer Museum of Art\, University of Kansas
DESCRIPTION:In 2009 Dr. Dusenbury travelled through the deserts of Xinjiang in Northwest China to the vibrant trading city of Kashgar\, before driving over the Torugart Pass in the Tien Shan mountains to the high summer pastures of Kyrgystan to stay in a herder’s yurt for several days. Then through Kyrgystan – looking at felt making- to the markets of Osh in the Fergana Valley on the border of Uzbekistan. The town of Osh had just celebrated its 3000-year anniversary. In the Fergana Valley she lodged with the weaver Fazlitdin Dadajanov and his family in Margilan while investigating ikat weaving and silk rearing in more detail than she had been able to do previously. She was accompanied by three colleagues who shared expertise and insights and helped by many local craftspeople and specialists. This journey complemented two previous trips\, one in 2002 to look at archaeological textiles in Xinjiang and the second\, in 2008\, to Uzbekistan to look at ikat weaving and other textile production. Dr. Dusenbury’s lecture will relate her experience with textile production in central Asia to the works on display in Reeds & Wool: Patterned Screens of Central Asia. \n  \nView the event recording.

DESCRIPTION:Nationally recognized local artist Phil Epp will present an illustrated talk titled “Images of Art and Design in Central Asia” describing his observations on art and design while traveling in Kazakhstan for Kauffman Museum’s Sunday-Afternoon-At-the-Museum series on Sunday\, March 12 at 3 p.m. \nEpp visited Kazakhstan in 2009 as a part of the State Department’s Art in Embassies program. Kazakhstan borders Kyrgyzstan\, the country of origin for the wall screens displayed in Kauffman Museum’s current special exhibition\, Reeds & Wool: Patterned Screens of Central Asia. Epp will highlight similarities between patterns and designs in the museum exhibit and artwork he encountered while traveling.

DESCRIPTION:Discussing the recently published memoir she describes as a personal land acknowledgement\, Raylene Hinz-Penner will talk about the central tension of the book\, reconciling her idyllic childhood on Dust Bowl land in southwest Kansas with the thorny issues of settler accountability\, the knowledge that the land on which her family thrived in the 1950’s and 60’s was once homeland to peoples who were forcibly removed from the land. \nAbout Raylene Hinz-Penner \nAfter retiring from a career of teaching Contemporary American Literature and Creative Writing at Bethel College\, North Newton\, Kansas and Washburn University\, Topeka\, Kansas\, Hinz-Penner has been writing about place–the land and its peoples\, its history and geography.  Her first book\, Searching for Sacred Ground:  The Journey of Chief Lawrence Hart\, Mennonite was published in 2007.  East of Liberal: Notes on the Land\, a “land acknowledgement” about the southwest Kansas Dust Bowl land where she grew up\, was published in December 2022.  Field Notes on the Levee\, a manuscript of poems and field sketches about the Topeka site where she lived for 20 years includes the forced Potawatomi march to Kansas and their early life on the land where Hinz-Penner lived in southwest Topeka.  Now living in North Newton\, she is an active member of Bethel College Mennonite Church\, maintaining wider fellowship status with Southern Hills Mennonite in Topeka.

DESCRIPTION:STAND students from all over the region have seen the effects of the vaping epidemic. Join us for a conversation about the rise of e-cigarettes and vaping\, its effects on young people\, and the positive things that STAND leaders are doing to encourage peers to make healthy decisions. Student panelists will be responding to questions about the past\, present\, and future of vaping\, as well as speaking about the impacts of vaping on their generation. \nThrough STAND\, youth are given opportunities and skills to reduce substance use\, promote positive mental health\, and take leadership to create significant change in their school and community.  Student leaders involved with STAND know that they are valuable contributors to social change and are empowered to lean into their strengths to impact the world around them. There are currently over 130 STAND students in 6 different communities that are working on creating a healthier\, more positive future for their peers. \nView the event recording.

Members of the community are invited to attend the free program. The program is made possible by Humanities Kansas. Sign up to attend on Zoom. The conversation will also be broadcasted live on the Kauffman Museum Facebook page. \nFlorence Schloneger and Pauline Sharp will share their family stories related to land ownership\, economics\, education and identity. Schloneger’s ancestors immigrated to Kansas in the 1800s while Sharp’s relatives\, as members of the Kanza tribe\, lived in central Kansas for centuries prior to the arrival of Europeans. Schloneger is a retired Mennonite minister. Sharp is a Kaw tribal member and board member of the Kanza Heritage Society. \nThis event is a public program to accompany the current special exhibition\, Crossroads: Change in Rural America\, a Smithsonian Institution traveling exhibition drawing on the history and culture of rural America to provoke fresh thinking and spark conversations about the future and sustainability of rural communities. As a host site\, Kauffman Museum will display a complementary exhibition\, Of Land & People: Our Community at the Crossroads of Change\, and host public programs that spark conversations about life in rural Kansas. \nCrossroads: Change in Rural America is part of Museum on Main Street\, a collaboration between the Smithsonian Institution and Humanities Kansas. \n  \nView the event recording.

SUMMARY:Sunday-Afternoon-at-the-Museum with Gene Chavez 
DESCRIPTION:Kauffman Museum in North Newton will host\, “Flour Power\,” a presentation and discussion by Gene T. Chávez on Sunday\, Dec. 13 at 3:00 p.m. online via Zoom. Members of the community are invited to attend the free program. The program is made possible by Humanities Kansas.  Sign up to attend on Zoom. The presentation will also be broadcasted live on the Kauffman Museum Facebook page. \nDuring the period of the Mexican Revolution\, many immigrants made their way to Kansas to raise their families and work in the railroad\, agricultural\, industrial\, and hospitality sectors of the state. A cultural offshoot of this new group of Mexican residents settling in the Midwest was the search for the perfect tortilla\, a staple of Mexican cuisine. Because corn tortillas were difficult to make by hand\, many restaurants and home cooks substituted wheat flour tortillas for their signature dishes. Join us to discuss the rich history of Mexican immigration to Kansas and the journey of the humble but important tortilla. \nGene Chávez is the founder and president of Chávez and Associates. He consults with groups throughout the country on bilingual education and cultural diversity. In addition\, he has taught at the secondary and post-secondary levels in Kansas and other states. \nThis event is a public program to accompany the current special exhibition\, Crossroads: Change in Rural America\, a Smithsonian Institution traveling exhibition drawing on the history and culture of rural America to provoke fresh thinking and spark conversations about the future and sustainability of rural communities. As a host site\, Kauffman Museum will display a complementary exhibition\, Of Land & People: Our Community at the Crossroads of Change\, and host public programs that spark conversations about life in rural Kansas. \nCrossroads: Change in Rural America is part of Museum on Main Street\, a collaboration between the Smithsonian Institution and Humanities Kansas.
