DESCRIPTION:North Newton is strategically located at a historic crossroads in south-central Kansas. Of Land and People: Our Community at the Crossroads of Change celebrates the land on which our museum and community is placed\, honors the people who have lived and worked on it\, and invites visitors to reflect on the profound changes that have occurred here. \nOf Land and People will introduce the story of First Kansans who hunted and traveled along Sand Creek; ponder the changes to the prairie and the enrichment to our community brought by immigrants; and explore the rich legacy of trails past and present in our town. \nThis exhibition is a local companion exhibit to the current special Smithsonian exhibit\, “Crossroads: Change in Rural America” that is showing at Kauffman Museum through Jan. 17.  This exhibit is FREE to view on Saturdays.

DESCRIPTION:Announcing Audubon’s 120th Christmas Bird Count and Halstead-Newton’s 70th year participating in community science data.\nYour participation continues to be important! \nInformation:\n• WHERE: Groups will meet at the Museum (27th and Main in\nNorth Newton) at 6:45 AM for group organization and\npaperwork. The final compilation is planned at the Museum at 4:45 PM.\n• WHEN: All regular participants are asked to be on the count for 8 hours if possible. If you cannot participate for the entire day\, it is helpful to find another person to fill out your 8-hour time period. Please let the organizer know of any arrangements that are made.\n• WHO: New participants are welcomed. You are encouraged to recruit other interested persons! Children are welcome. (Note that individuals 12 or under should be accompanied by an adult)\n• WHAT: Bring a pair of binoculars and a sack lunch. (KM will be open at noon for groups who want to eat lunch indoors.) A birding field guide is also helpful. \nContact the organizer by December 12\, so that groups can be appropriately organized. Past group leaders can count circles that they have counted previously.
